In a recent discussion with my colleagues in the language profession an interesting question came up (somewhat indirectly): Which actions have a direct impact on and help raise the bar in the language profession? Of course, there is no single answer to that question. Various professionals all over the world contribute in their own ways. But I’m nothing if not introspective. So, the discussion got me thinking. What can I do to have a positive impact on my profession?
Inspired by several esteemed colleagues, and taking into account my background as a professor, I’ve decided to create an online place where legal and language professionals can share their collective knowledge and know-how, discuss language and writing issues, and exchange best practices.
The meeting place will be Facebook, specifically the group Legal Writing and Translation. In this initial phase, group activities will include:
1) Word of the Week (WOW) Discussions: Every Monday, I’ll suggest a Word of the Week in English and prompt multilingual discussions around that word. I will usually suggest Spanish translations for my WOWs and encourage professionals who work in other language combinations to chime in.
2) Legal Writing Challenges: Every now and then, I’ll propose a short legal writing challenge that will only take a couple of minutes and is aimed at keeping our writing brains sharp.
3) Legal Translation Challenge: I’ll also propose a very brief legal translation challenge from time to time that members can attempt to translate into their language and share on the group to get constructive feedback from their peers.
4) Book reviews and recommended reading: I’ll also share book reviews and recommended reading resources for legal and translation professionals.
The group is and always will be free and open to members of both the legal and language communities. It is intended for learning and knowledge sharing only. The group is already online (here), so feel free to join. Our first group activity will be available on Monday, February 19th.
I hope to see you there!
